Where ancient practice meets modern medicine.

When the Qigong Academy was founded in 2022 we had a clear vision: to build bridges between traditional Qigong with evidence-based Western healthcare. This has informed all of our training programmes as well as our commitment to high quality academic and medical research.

Following this path, a key question emerged — How quickly can we train people to deliver Qigong-based interventions in a mainstream healthcare setting? – This course is our answer.

Working with our training and research partners at Oxford University and Oxford Health, we found that we could train people in basic qigong techniques and theories to a point that they could teach in a safe and confident way in just two days. This approach focusses on

  • Simple, easily adapted Qigong movements
  • Accessible theories that supports both personal practice and the way in which you teach
  • Methods of teaching safely and effectively in a western environment

Although initially designed for healthcare professionals, we quickly found that the same approach worked incredibly well for those working in holistic health, and those wanting to start on their journey to teach qigong.

Since launching, this approach has proven highly effective, but most importantly, this isn’t just a 2 day training programme, it’s a gateway to our the ongoing support that is central to our online teachers community.

The Core Practice

Four movements.
Infinite application.

When you look at the vast majority of styles of qigong, we find a number of common themes: They all use a combination of movement and stillness and they will all support you in becoming more skilful with your qi.

Each school of qigong will have developed and evolved in response to specific needs and requirements. This specialisation goes a long way to explain the depth of understanding and huge potential of this practice, but when we strip things back we find that we can introduce the practice through four movements.

Each of these movements brings focus to different aspects that can be expressed in the following way:

1

Relaxation

Techniques that release held tension and guide the nervous system towards ease — accessible to anyone, anywhere.

2

Awareness

Cultivating present-moment attention through mindful movement and breath — the foundation of all effective Qigong practice.

3

Mobilisation

Gentle movement sequences that restore natural range of motion and encourage Qi to flow freely through the body.

4

Recentering

Returning to balance after exertion or distraction — restoring groundedness, clarity and a sense of inner stillness.

What attendee say about the training

  • Recommended for anyone who thinks they might like Qigong and want to share it with others.

My expectation was that I would be taught a very specific form of movements to practice and replicate, but what you gave us was far more powerful.
I have believed for a long time that I want certainty, order and accuracy in my life but this drive for what is the right way is the opposite of kindness and freedom.
By stripping back the movements and giving them to us without expectation is powerful.
As someone who is not naturally confident, I immediately felt able to share the benefits of this approach with others.

  • Highly recommend.

I’ve been on many trainings but nothing like this one. I felt valued by the whole person approach and found the teachings easily accessible. The relaxed and open demeanour of the teacher was exceptional, both welcoming and inspirational.   The teaching was informal, delivered with background knowledge that included fun and helpful story telling giving context to the ancient practices.  Directions were clear, not just with words, but also kinaesthetically appealing to the senses. And most importantly, the infectious enthusiasm, presence and good humour of the teacher made it a comfortable, safe space to ask questions, debate and offer as well as receive creative feedback.

  • Highly recommended an antidote to modern life.

A light-hearted, fun and playful course that lacks dogma and offers the freedom to explore ways of teaching qigong in a truly supportive environment.

The course hit the perfect balance, enabling me to step far enough outside of my comfort zone to engage in genuine learning without feeling overwhelmed or wanting to run away. The simplicity of the approach felt like a door into something truly meaningful and transformative. An invitation to enter a space of expanded perspective.

  • Highly recommended

I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants a grounded, intelligent and practical introduction to Qigong. John Millar is an exceptional teacher, and this training gives practitioners the confidence to begin sharing the power, subtlety and simplicity of Qigong in a way that feels safe, respectful and deeply human.

  • Highly accessible and genuinely valuable.

John is an excellent teacher with a deep knowledge of Qigong, built over decades of practice. He brings real depth to his instruction, sharing refinements and details in the movements that I had not encountered before. The movements taught on this introductory teaching course are highly accessible and would be of genuine value to anyone supporting people with their health, whether in a clinical or holistic setting.
